A way to grow as a person after a loved relative or friend dies is to honor their memory, cherishing all the enjoyment they brought to you when you were together. For the women of musical group Local Divas, their New Year’s Eve performance gives them an opportunity to honor their friend and former group member Loyal Garner.
“This year will mark the 10th anniversary of Loyal’s passing, so the timing is perfect. After she passed we tried to get the group back together, but it was still very sensitive for all of us. She was such a core part of our group,” says Local Diva Nohelani Cypriano.
On Dec. 31 at Hilton Hawaiian Village’s Coral Ballroom, Carole Kai, Melveen Leed and Cypriano will reunite for an enchanting evening of songs and performances. Local Divas, which was created in 1997, could not be more thrilled about the upcoming performance, and they have been working hard to get that symmetry between them back again.
“We’ve been practicing for a few months now and having a blast. It has been a bit challenging getting back in shape vocally, but we sound like we did 10 years ago,” says Cypriano, who was featured on the second-ever MidWeek‘s cover in July 1984 and again in Dec. 6, 2000. “We are going to utilize a lot of video in dedication to Loyal, we are honoring her so we have different memories that will be brought out, as well as our own dedications to her music. We want to honor her legacy, her music and go up there and have fun celebrating life.”
Cypriano has continued to sing over the past decade, performing on the Navatek Cruises, at the Moana Surfrider hotel, touring in Asia, as well as performing at military bases in Iraq in conjunction with Carole Kai Charities. Aside from the New Year’s Eve concert, she has many other commitments she’s proud to be a part of. She is currently performing at Tropics Bar & Grill at Hilton Hawaiian Village Thursdays from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. and Fridays after the fireworks to 10:30 p.m.
Cypriano also is opening her own recording studio next month and continues to work as a booking agent for young musicians who are looking to start their career. Through an abiding understanding that she was always supposed to be in and around music, she is always appreciative.
“I have been very lucky, very blessed,” she says. “All I know is music, and it is all I ever want to do, as long as it is around creating, producing or involves music.”
