Maui’s reggae ambassador Marty Dread is staying busy making and compiling hit music, including a new album The Hits 2003-2010. It’s a sampler of choice cuts from the albums he released during that time period coupled with various unreleased singles.
Dread also will be in town Thursday night (May 20) to promote his newest album at a CD release party from 7 p.m. to 4 a.m. at The Shack in Waikiki (2255 Kuhio Ave. in the Waikiki Trade Center). Cover charge is $5 (21 and over).
“I have been doing a monthly show on the third Thursday of each month at The Shack for almost a year now and really getting a good following and reputation as a live performer,” says Dread, 40, who was born in The Bronx and moved to Maui when he was 8. He currently resides in Haiku on Maui’s north shore.
“The show should be exciting. Some tunes are staples of my live shows and others are some that no one has ever heard live before.”
Hosted by Phat Joe from Island 98.5, the party also features musical guests Anuhea, O-Shen, Hot Rain, Jasmin and others.
As for his new release, Dread says it has a very rounded feel to it, as the songs were produced by a wide range of music producers such as London’s Mad Professor and the late Mikey Dread. The album includes a variety of music genres, including reggae, dub, hip-hop and bluegrass/country.
“People request songs from all my 16 previous releases when I play live, so I wanted to put together the most-requested songs from the past few albums in one package and offer a ‘Best of Marty Dread’-type release,” he says.
Dread appeared on MidWeek‘s cover in November 2001 and has since released six additional albums and toured the world, traveling to China, Brazil, Guam, Tahiti and the west coasts of America and Canada.
He says that no matter where he travels, his primary focus is being an ambassador of aloha and spreading the music of Hawaii everywhere he goes through live shows and recordings.
“I wish to portray a message of responsibility and action in my music,” he says, adding that he always longed for something with a deeper meaning. “We need to be the change we want to see.”
According to Dread, his dream has always been to play music for those who appreciate it most, not for those who pay the most - and this dream has come into fruition.
“I came to realize that music is a powerful force for social change, and I wanted to be a part of something bigger and better than pop culture. I wanted to find my culture - I found it in reggae music.”
