Good, fun music with some good, fun guys (hence the photo above) is what you’re going to get Saturday as Jerome Koko, John Koko and Moon Kauakahi take over Aloha Tower for their annual “Take a Walk in the Country” concert.
And they’re serving it up with all-you-can-eat, ono grinds for those in the up-close “Emperor Section” seats. The buffet, provided by Chai’s Island Bistro, will include Alaskan King Crab Cake, Thai Curry Puffs with Fresh Mango Tomato Salsa, Jumbo Shrimp and Crab Claws Cocktail, Braised Long Island Duck Legs, Classic Tahitian Vanilla Crème Brulee and much more.
Entertainment starts at 6:30 p.m., doors open at 5:30 for those seated in the Emperor Section; general admission is at 6.
Opening the concert is the Hawaiian Connection (Barry Kimokeo, Bernard Kalua and Alika Odom), followed by Na Iwaiwa and a secret special guest. Featured guests Halau Hula ‘O Hokulani, Halau Hula ‘O Kawaili’ula, Ka Leo ‘O Laka I Kahikina O Ka La, Puka’ikapuaokalani Hula Halau and Jerome’s always lovely daughter Kealo also will take the stage. The show will be hosted by master of ceremonies Billy V.
“Our fans have come to expect the best traditional Hawaiian music and hula at our concerts, and we won’t disappoint them,” says Jerome. “It’ll be a mix of old and new with some surprises. The way the waterfront is set up, it will allow us to do a more intimate show.”

Besides gearing up for this annual bash, Moon, John and Jerome, who were featured on MidWeek‘s cover in April 2002, have been packing a pretty full schedule. And the performances continue to pile on.
“We will be traveling, recording and etc. - mostly etc.,” laughs Jerome. “We are leaving town right after the concert, come back for three days, then head off to the Northwest for five shows. In July, we’re going to the Midwest and then the East Coast in September. In between we have some shows scheduled on Oahu and the outer islands, and of course Japan. In November, we go to Mexico for the first time.”
With all that happening, it’s no wonder that putting together an album has been a bit of a challenge.
“We have been putting the songs together and perform some of them at our concerts,” says Moon. “Every album has its own personality and an energy all its own, so choosing the right mix of songs, whether original or a new arrangement of a published song, is very important, and the process can’t be rushed. We have recorded over 20 CDs, but this one will be the first on our record label, so it will be very special.”
