For this woman, the sky’s the limit. Producer, teacher, businesswoman, CEO and now author - you name it, she’s done it. Lurline McGregor released her first book, Between the Deep Blue Sea and Me, last November. A work of fiction based on a screenplay, McGregor says this novel has been in the works for the past two years.
“It’s a contemporary story about what it means to be Hawaiian today. I was inspired by Whale Rider, which I saw in a packed theater in Los Angeles,” she says. “I was amazed at how this Maori story could have such an impact on an audience, who probably knew very little about Maori people. That was my inspiration to write a story about my own community that could speak to a worldwide audience.”
McGregor appeared on MidWeek‘s cover in July 2000 as president and CEO of `Olelo Community Television. And although it’s been nearly five years since she left the company, she still takes pride in `Olelo’s accomplishments.
“It is most rewarding to see the video productions coming out of `Olelo’s satellite centers that I helped start, especially Waianae, where the students at Searider Productions have taken video production to a whole new level of professionalism,” McGregor enthuses.
McGregor also has produced several videos, taught a graduate seminar on native film on the Mainland, managed her own business and, among other things, has been a consultant to an Indian tribe.
For McGregor, writing brings great joy. She says it’s a whole different challenge that she finds very freeing. In fact, she’s already begun working on a sequel to Between the Deep Blue Sea and Me. McGregor hopes that her novel will one day make it to the big screen, but for now, she says her plans and dreams are ever evolving.
“I’m inspired by stories from my culture, I’m inspired by the stories that are being made all the time around us,” McGregor says passionately.
“Mostly I want to tell stories that have meaning, that can be helpful to people, give them insights into their own lives or situations, and continue to do work that benefits the community.”
