Did you know that before Frank De Lima made comedy a career he was studying to be a priest, receiving a degree from St. Patrick’s Seminary and University in California? That is just one fun fact about The Portuguese Prince of Hawaiian Comedy, whose parodies, including Filipino Christmas and The Meanest Paniolo, made him a household name in Hawaii.

Beginning his comedic career more than 36 years ago, De Lima continues to perform publicly and privately. Teaming up with Augie T, the duo know as The Babooze Braddahs is currently touring Hawaii and the Mainland. (You can find their schedule by visiting frankdelima.com.)

“As a lot of the showrooms in Waikiki are gone, I have teamed up with Augie T and I also do private gigs, like birthdays, weddings, graduations,” says De Lima, who was on MidWeek‘s cover July 31, 1985.

What you also may not know about De Lima is, when he is not on stage taking humorous shots at each ethnicity, since 1985 he has been traveling statewide from school to school entertaining students and teaching them about morals, work ethic and hope. The Frank De Lima Student Enrichment Program, a nonprofit organization, will cover 140 schools this upcoming 2011-2012 school year.

“The subject this year is going to be hope that there is hope in everything, you just have to keep striving for your goals,” he says.

Another subject De Lima touches on with young people is understanding an appropriate sense of humor, and knowing how and when humor should be used.

“The kids need to understand that they need to get permission before they do any kind of clowning around, joking or singing of a funny song. I tell them I do it as a profession and that people come to see me,” he says. “The audience should choose the comedy they want to hear and see.”

On Aug. 25 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Ala Moana Hotel’s Hibiscus Ballroom, Saint Francis Healthcare Foundation of Hawaii presents Cirque De Lima: A Tribute to Joy, Laughter & Frank De Lima. This special event is a tribute and an honor to De Lima for his many years of bridging Hawaii’s cultures and making people laugh.
