A jack of all trades, Ed Nishioka has worked as a television reporter, producer, owner of Nishioka & Associates and cabinet member for Mayors Frank F. Fasi and Mufi Hannemann, to name a few of his accomplishments. Now, Nishioka is focusing on a new chapter in his life - as a member of the Rapid Transit Division for the Department of Transportation Services.
“The rail transit project was an opportunity of a lifetime, so I left the ranks of being a cabinet member to go back and be a regular city worker, and have not looked back,” says Nishioka, who serves as the chief public information officer responsible for all public relations for the rail project.
“I like challenges, and a chance to operate on a great team is a challenge,” he adds. “I wake up every morning excited to ‘attack’my job with a passion. I get to work on a professional team on a daily basis, and that’s a nice feeling.”
Although Nishioka is quick to admit that his job is definitely not easy, he never tires of working day in and day out, learning every step of the way.
“This is a winning team,” this husband, and a father of three (two boxers and an English bulldog) says. “Everyone works hard on behalf of the project, and it is just about the most can-do attitude environment I have been in in my life.”
According to Nishioka, the state will take an estimated $700 million out of the economy in the next two years, and with construction stalled it is evident that solutions are needed.
“It is important that we work on a system now that will benefit future generations and benefit our current generation by keeping our economy going,” he says.
Nishioka last appeared on MidWeek‘s cover in June 2001, which featured a who’s who in technology. Prior to working for the city, he played a huge role in the Pro Bowl for the past 14 years, and has had the opportunity to own a publication, Hawaiian Hard Drive, represent a movie theater chain and consult with various companies. To this day, Nishioka says, he enjoys creating something out of nothing.
Where does he find the inspiration and energy to do it all? “I have a really strong family, and that helps,” exclaims the avid football fanatic. In fact, he’s been a part of the Manning Passing Academy for four years and volunteers his time at its annual football camp in Louisiana.
“I live life concentrating on things I can change, letting go of the past and making sure each day is a special day because our time is very limited. I try to look for the good in everything and everyone,” Nishioka says.
“Visualize where you want to be and go for it with a passion, and soon you will be there.”
