Pro golfer and Hawaii’s own Dean Wilson currently resides on Hawaii’s “ninth island,” Las Vegas - his home away from home while not on tour. Busy as ever, Wilson competed in the PGA Tour St. Jude Classic in Memphis, Tenn., last week and previously played in the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial Ft. Worth, Texas, to name a couple.
He didn’t make the cut at the St. Jude Classic, despite scoring a hole-in-one. In a qualifier in Columbus, Ohio, for last week’s U.S. Open, he placed in a tie for the final spot, then missed out in the ensuing playoff.
“My short game, putting, is always good,” says the Kaneohe native and Castle High graduate who has been living in Vegas for the past 10 years. “My driver seems to be my weakness now. Once I get my long game up to that level, I’ll be in good shape.”
Wilson was honorary chairman for the First Hawaiian Bank REHAB Golf Challenge held last month at Hawaii Prince Golf Club in Ewa Beach. As the state’s largest single charity tournament, Wilson was honored to be a part of it.
“I couldn’t be there because of prior obligations and traveling, but it was great to support an excellent cause. I hope I can attend next year.”
Wilson appeared on MidWeek‘s cover in September 2006, and since then has been traveling across the world doing what he loves - playing golf.
A graduate of Brigham Young University, Wilson turned pro in 1992. He’s been victorious many times throughout his professional career, winning six times on the Japan Golf Tour and once on the PGA Tour at the 2006 International.
Since turning pro, Wilson spends much of his time on the road, competing in 30 to 35 tournaments each year.
“It’s quite hectic; I’ve been on the road for the last seven weeks. At first it was hard being away for weeks at a time, but I’ve gotten used to it - it keeps me busy, and it’s something I enjoy and have always wanted to do,” says Wilson, who took on the game at 13, following in his mother’s footsteps. “My mom played golf, and then when I started to play, I fell in love with the game.”
And although the sport has kept him away from his island home, he makes it a point to come back at least once a year, where Wilson says he enjoys playing the Waialae course. Other things that top his list?
“Hanging out with my family and friends, and eating at Alan Wong’s, and breakfast at Sam Choy’s!”
