Charlie Goodwin’s years with the FBI have served him well. During his three and half years here on Oahu working as the special agent in charge of the Honolulu field office, Goodwin experienced a lot and made some wonderful friends along the way, including co-workers Terri Hao and Ellen Loeffelholz. The longtime agent is retiring Feb. 2, partly because he would be required to in 10 months anyway, but also so he can pursue his other life passions.

“We (the FBI) have an age 57 mandatory retirement. I’m not quite there, I’m 56, but I would only have 10 months left,” explains the MidWeek cover subject of June 2004.

His retirement party is Jan. 31, which is also his birthday, and will be held at Kamaka Air Service near the Honolulu Airport. The evening, as Goodwin describes it, is “going to be different, not your $55 rubber chicken dinner.” Goodwin will be roasted and honored by his co-workers, family, friends from the community and other important people in his life.

What will he do in his “retirement”? Well, he won’t be sitting around watching TV. Goodwin has signed on to work as a consultant for the Professional Golfers Association Tour in a private capacity.

“It’s kind of a varied job. It deals with risk management, liaison with local police, security, (also) working with other members of the tour-rules officials, marshals and volunteers,” he explains.

He’s also going to use his pilot skills to try to set up air charter trips, specifically flying people throughout the Hawaiian Islands for golf outings.

The third item on his agenda is to “hopefully remain as an unpaid consultant to the FBI, I’d like to stay in a position to help the government, state, city and county.”

“There’s no question that I’ll miss it,” says the FBI veteran of his job. “I spent almost 25 years with the FBI, nine with the county, and did law for a couple of years. It’s been a good run.”

Goodwin also plans to do some more exercising, including running the Honolulu Marathon next year, and take rides on his new bicycle.

“I’m trying to stay young,” he laughs.

The East Oahu resident lives with his wife, Diane, and their 34-year-old parrot, Abraham (yes, their parrot is really 34!). The couple has two daughters, Brooke and Emily. One recently graduated from college with a second degree in nursing. The other is an artist, working in an art gallery. The entire Goodwin crew is currently all living here on Oahu, but the proud dad says he expects his girls will someday “gravitate” back to the Mainland. - Kerry Miller
