As both a comedian and inspirational speaker, Bo Irvine is keeping busy these days traveling, making people laugh and being mistaken for famous Hawaiian icons.
“I just got back from Amarillo, Texas. They loved it, they thought I was Don Ho,” jokes the former MidWeek cover subject from May 1992.
Speaking of Irvine’s comedy, fans can find the comedian doing his act at Sharkey’s Comedy Club in Aiea on Saturday nights.
“We’re really trying to promote comedy here in Hawaii,” he says, adding that beginning Thursday, Oct. 26 the club will host improv nights.
Also planned at Sharkey’s are comedy classes, focusing on improv and stand up. Through the classes Irvine hopes to instill the finer points of presenting comedy to young stand-up hopefuls on the island. The club has recruited Bobby Duncan and the Comedy Crusaders from Hollywood to instruct the classes, along with Irvine. Anyone interested in attending can call 531-HAHA.
Irvine travelled to Texas recently to present his Seriously, Living with Diabetes Can Be Funny program.
Since being diagnosed with Type II diabetes five years ago, Irvine was worked as an inspirational speaker on the subject, going from conference to conference, educating others about living day to day with diabetes.
“When I found out I had diabetes it was a shock to me. It’s doom and gloom, up and down. I talk (in his presentation) about the things that diabetics live with every day. I don’t make light of it, I talk about and remind people that we have diabetes, telling my story, and my story is everybody’s story,” says the Kailua resident.
On Nov. 11 Irvine travels to an annual conference for endocrinologists in San Fransisco, and on to the “Take Control of Diabetes” event on Nov. 18 in San Diego, as part of his Seriously Living with Diabetes Can Be Funny tour, which Irvine says is “really taking off.” CNBC recently put together a spot on his program, including a bit about his standup career.
On the family front, Irvine’s oldest son, Jeremy, 25, graduated from Maui County’s firefighting academy last week.
“He’s going to be a Maui firefighter,” exclaims the proud dad. “My youngest one, Scotty (17), is playing football for Pac-5.”
Of course, Irvine’s trusty Australian beagle, 7-year-old Dundee, is still alive and well.
