NO CONTRACTS, no coaches and no bull ... Um, make that no NBA. Monday, Sept. 12, is the first game day for the locked out and league-less. The NBA player-only Impact Basketball Competitive Training Series tournament will last for a couple of weeks. Records will be kept, standings posted, proceeds from ticket sales will go to charity and the games will be streamed live on YouTube. Organizers promise to repeat the tourney as long as the lockout continues. It may be the closest thing pro basketball fans get to a season this year ...

WHAT HAPPENS when you crossbreed Pai Gow and Blackjack? You’d get something like 7-14-21. The object of the single deck game is to put your six cards into three hands closer to 7, 14 and 21 than the dealer’s. According to the Wizard of Odds, the strategy is easy, the pace is slow, the volatility is low and the house edge is only 0.54 percent. Players get 4-1 for a perfect hand (exactly 7, 14 and 21) regardless of the dealer’s cards. For now the game is playable exclusively at the Palms. Jenna Hollenbeck of Rochester correctly identified 15 songs in less than 60 seconds including The Doors’ Riders on the Storm, Take Me or Leave Me from Rent, and Pantera’s Cemetery Gates. Fifty contestants are selected per show to compete for the big money at the Imperial Palace’s Human Nature showroom.
