WELCOME TO Kimo’s Vegas ... The Player’s Edge!
“THE GENERAL” (the retired Division I basketball coach) Bobby Knight and veteran sportscaster Billy Packer will be live from the sports book at the Wynn Las Vegas ... Check out Survive and Advance starting March 15 on Fox Sports Network.
DEFENDING THE CAVEMAN, or why guys do what we do, moves to the Strip from Downtown ... now a permanent fixture on the Excalibur’s entertainment roster. More than 8 million people have seen the show worldwide, and Kevin Burke, the star of the one-man show, won last year’s Meatball Award for “Entertainer of the Year.”
CAESARS PALACE has put its latest development, Octavius Tower, on the back burner. About six months away from being ready for occupancy, Harrah’s Entertainment has stopped construction on the inside until demand for rooms in Vegas increases. The convention space, three 10,000-square-foot villas and the Garden of the Gods pool and garden area will open by mid-summer, as planned.
HAWAII RESIDENTS have been known to pay a premium for the best sashimi to go with our even more-expensive New Year’s aerials. And Vegas visitors overpay for Strip sashimi and sushi all year long. But in Japan, Miki Hizume has put her wallet where her mouth is. The Tokyo housewife paid $153,000 for her New Year’s trophy ahi, saying the bluefin was so fresh she could feel the smell rush up to her nose as she popped the first piece in her mouth. I wonder if she’d be interested in some land I have on the Big Island ... It’s got a bridge on it.

NEXT TIME you “Get Your Vegas On,” just make like Clint Uwaine of Honolulu, who won $27,135.50; Edward Ansai of Wailuku, who won $25,000; or Dominador Salcedo of Honolulu, who won $20,000 - at the Cal.
STARTING TODAY, you can go Vegas free ... Just listen for the Hawaiian105 KINE Song of the Day every weekday morning at 7:50. Then listen for the song between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. When it’s over, be the 10th caller at 296-1051 and you’ll be singing Viva Las Vegas with Billy V when he broadcasts live to Hawaii from the Cal in March.
MORE FUN AND GAMES ... In 1935, Charles Darrow patented the most commercially successfully board game ever. Monopoly has sold more than 200 million games, been translated into 37 languages and has been played by an estimated 750 million people. (I’ve got four different versions in my closet. How about you?) Go directly to Vegas ... Like the Olympics, the World Monopoly Championships happen once every four years, and this October representatives from 49 countries will vie for the title and the grand prize purse of $15,140 ... an amount equal to all the Monopoly money that comes in the (non-computerized) home game.
DID YOU HEAR about the bride who was supposed to get married on New Year’s Eve in Vegas but the would-be groom (Raymond Jackson) split to Maui with her credit cards? ... Auwe!
LAST MONTH an armed robbery happened at the Sahara Hotel and Casino poker room. The gunman took an undisclosed amount from the cashier but didn’t rob any players. Next time you’re in the Sahara, check out how far the robber had to go to pull this off.
TONY THOMAS of Henderson, Nev., complained to AARP that he wasn’t getting his bi-monthly magazine ... 18 months and five phone calls later, the retired fireman’s subscription finally restarted. The postal service delivered 1,000 copies of the latest issue.
