Welcome to Kimo’s Vegas… The Players Edge!
Imagine waking up Wednesday morning and an angel says to you, “I’ve got good and bad news, which do you want first?” How about the good news first? The angel says, “Your name is Peter Eastgate and you beat 6,843 other players in the 2008 World Series of Poker and won $9,152,416.” So what’s the bad news? “You’re a professional poker player from Denmark and you owe your government $6,660,545 in taxes.” Laughing all the way to the bank is Ivan Demidov who owes his country, Russia, just 13 percent of the $5,809,595 in second-place money he won.
Last week the Las Vegas Sands filed a disclosure with the government’s Securities and Exchange Commission saying it may not be able to maintain the required leverage ratios (company debt vs. company equity). Looking to raise a billion dollars in capital, the owner of the Venetian & Palazzo is offering 181.8 million shares of common stock at $5.50 a share. Analysts believe this could dilute the current stock price even further ... it closed at $5.19 the day the sale was announced.

More bad news at the Palazzo: Money problems have halted construction of the $600 million St. Regis condo tower in front of the hotel. The company also halted construction on its two properties in Macau. You’re not alone if you think this ride is nowhere near the end.
Aficionados of that new casino smell will want to check out Aliante Station (about 20 miles away from the Strip). It opened at 11:11 p.m. on 11/11 and is a “locals” resort, meaning it’s designed to appeal to the residents of the Las Vegas market (different kine locals).
Hawaiian kine locals will be cheering UFC lightweight champion BJ Penn when he attempts to be the first fighter to hold two championship titles simultaneously Jan. 31 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. The last time he and Georges St-Pierre fought, Penn lost by a narrow split decision. Looking for a Christmas gift for the guy who has everything? How about the ultimate guy-cation… Panda Travel is offering the “BJ Penn Ultimate Experience” that includes air, hotel, tickets to a BJ Penn Rally, tickets to the Penn/Pierre fight (in a special Hawaii section), admission to the official after party and much more. Bonus: You’ll be in Vegas for the Super Bowl the next day. Get the link for more info at http://www.KimosVegas.com.

The first report of the flu in Las Vegas happened last week - a little earlier than usual. It’s a good reminder to get your flu shot and bring a jacket if you’re goin’ Vegas soon.
Eagle eyes wen’ spock Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Shane Victorino bowling with family and friends at the Red Rock Casino…
When her world tour ends in March, Celine Dion is planning to return to Caesars Palace but not with the same schedule as before. According to husband and manager Rene Angelil, she’ll rotate appearances with Bette Midler and Cher.
It’s cheaper to fill ‘er up in Vegas: Last week self-serve gas was as low as $2.19 compared to our low of $2.51.
