WELCOME to Kimo’s Vegas! This week on the radio, Dan Shumny, the VP of sales and marketing for the Golden Nugget, talks about the new owners and the changes happening at one of our favorite hotels in downtown Las Vegas Thursday at 9 a.m. and Friday at 6:30 p.m. on Sports Radio 1420.
NOW THAT the MGM Grand’s makeover is almost complete, look for the company to pour its energies and $$$ into The Mirage. Look for new places to eat, a new club, a new lounge and a new gaming area. The cherry on top may be the Cirque du Soleil show based on the music of the Beatles scheduled to open next summer.
CONGRATS TO Mrs. Hawaii Kerry Cecil for surviving the Mrs. U.S. Pageant in Vegas (so that’s why it was so hot).
THE WYNN Las Vegas just released its numbers for the first 64 days of operation — it generated net revenues of $201.1 million (that’s $3 million a day). Almost half of that came from gaming ($98.7 million) of that, $34 million was from slots and $62 million from the tables (yes that’s dollars, not Yugoslavian dinars). Each slot machine in the joint made an average of $273 and each table game made about $7,117.
DAS GOOD, ’cause now you too can own property on the strip. The Cosmopolitan Hotel & Casino (opening in 2007 near the Bellagio) is selling 1,700 of its 2,700 rooms (prices start at $650K … lemme know if you want a condo sitter) and you can put the unit into the hotel’s rental pool at any time (there goes my condo-sitting business).
JOSEPHINE PANG of Waianae won $5,000 on the Fremont’s Treasure Chest VP machine (lup chong for everyone)! And the Quarter Wheel of Fortune at the airport hits again! This time, Shawn Green won $973,132. The WOF keeps on giving: Nathan Ellsworth, $225,185 at the Wynn, and Jose Machuca $608,204. Colleen Whalin hit $134,063 on the 25- cent Elvis at the MGM. Regina Scott won $109,153 on the nickel Harley machine. Joan Kunzler hit the Millionaire 777s for a whopping $1,866,641 on her third pull (9 bucks).
NEVADA IS the first state to allow betting on casino games using wireless mobile devices. What does this mean? Soon you’ll be sitting at the pool, sipping a mai tai and playing a favorite video poker machine from your chaise lounge.
FITZGERALD’S and the Fremont Street Experience pay homage to The King on the anniversary of his passing. Look for Steve Connolly (tribute artist), a 10-piece band and special guests in a musical tribute to Elvis that spans his entire career from the ’50s through the ’70s.
IF YOU like clothes … the Magic Marketplace is for you. It all happens at the end of the month. Look for stuff on sale at all the malls as everyone puts on their Sunday best for the 5,000 retail clothing and accessory buyers attending the convention.
MARGIE KANAHELE from Hilo can’t go to Vegas this year and was wondering if Barry Manilow would still be playing in 2007. Rudy Prieto, CEO and GM of the Las Vegas Hilton, replies: “The success of Barry’s show is a testament to the success of our entertainment policy. In extending Barry’s long-term agreement into 2007, we are continuing a strong relationship with a superstar of international appeal that offers our customers an experience that they cannot find anywhere else.”
