WELCOME to Kimo’s Vegas ... The Player’s Edge!
THE 22-YEAR-OLD singer-songwriter Colbie Caillat performs at the Hard Rock Hotel Casino July 22. Her hit Bubbly made her an online phenom and a platinum recording artist after the song had more than 10 million plays on MySpace. If the guy playing the ukulele looks familiar, that’s because he’s local recording artist Justin “Kawika"Young, who was home last month to perform with her at the Diversity Harmony Peace event at the Sheraton Waikiki Hawaii Ballroom.
THE AIRLINES ARE beginning to charge for all kinds of things we’re accustomed to getting for free - a second checked bag, soda or snack. Some airlines are even charging more for a window or aisle seat ... pretty soon we may have to pay to use the airplane’s bathroom!
SEVEN IS widely regarded as a lucky number (even though no one is certain why). But The World Poker Tour VII will certainly be lucky for the winner when the season starts at the Bellagio July 11. First place wins $25,000, and players can register now at the poker room.
THE UFC HAS a new CEO ... and he’s the highest-paid casino exec in Sin City (he made $113.8 million last year) - Station Casino’s president Lorenzo Fertitta. His brother Frank Fertitta III, Dana White and he bought the league in 2001 for $2 million, but the company’s growth is exploding, and the brothers decided to divide and conquer with Frank at the helm of the billion-dollar (family) casino business and Lorenzo in charge of the global UFC expansion.
THE LAS VEGAS-based Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has surpassed boxing as the modern-day contact sport.

Outspoken league president and self-proclaimed bad guy Dana White is featured in this month’s Vegas and Rolling Stone magazines. He says “When the UFC tours to a new destination, it often breaks attendance records. Usually, the UFC is No. 1 and the Rolling Stones are No. 2. It’s the ideal distraction for today’s Xbox generation.”
TIMES ARE TOUGH all over ... Prostitution is legal in some Nevada communities but not within the city limits of Las Vegas (although you wouldn’t know it when there’s a large convention in town). With the price of gas on the rise and the number of drivers softening, what’s a brothel fallin’ on hard times to do? Advertise ... You’ll see signage along the Strip for the “Shady Lady Ranch” offering free $50 and $100 gas cards, and the “Moonlight Bunny Ranch” that’s offering to double customers’ stimulus checks.
TIMES ARE EVEN TOUGHER if you’re a maid at the Imperial Palace. The housekeepers visited the Culinary Union with more than 100 signatures on a petition requesting representation citing poor working conditions that included a workload of 18 to 22 rooms per day (union maids average 16), having to work through breaks and lunch hours (causing some workers to faint and be hospitalized) - only to be rejected by the union.
THERE’S A NEW kind of table at the Rio’s I-Bar ... It’s a high-tech interactive bar table that lets you create and order your own customized drinks, watch YouTube videos, play touch-screen games, flirt with other club-goers - and you can even take pictures and send them via e-mail.
ON DISPLAY at the Las Vegas Hilton is the grand prize they’re giving away at the end of this month ... a genuine blackjack table from the casino floor. Too bad it’s only open to Nevada residents.
