WELCOME to Kimo’s Vegas… The Players Edge!
NIGHTMARE ON Wynn Street ... In 1997 Steve Wynn (his name’s on the hotel) paid $48.4 million for Pablo Picasso’s “Le Reve” (translated into English, it means “The Dream”). A couple of weeks ago he sold the painting to art collector Steven Cohen for $139 million! Like us local folks, Wynn gestures with his hands as he talks (part Portagee). While showing the painting to some friends, he accidentally hit the painting with his elbow, creating a hole in the masterpiece!
IN THIS WEEK’S Time magazine, there’s an article titled “Egos Bigger than China.” The subtitle says it all: “Steve Wynn and Sheldon Adelson take their feud - and their gaming strategies - to Macau.” It’s a great look at the battle between these two gaming titans that began in Vegas and continues in Macau. Chef Michael Mina
STRIPSTEAK in the Mandalay Bay is Chef Michael Mina’s fourth restaurant. It’s the first restaurant-ultra lounge combo in Vegas, and at $7 million it’s also his most expensive eatery to date. On the menu, one of the two 200-year-old Scotches in the world ($25,000 for the bottle or $700 a shot). But a steak joint is gonna make its name on its beef, and prices start at $62 for an 8-ounce ribcap, with the ribeye Kobe at $170, or a Kobe filet mignon going for $195. The secret to its tasty (albeit expensive) beef is meat poaching, a process of cooking with gentle, moist heat using a minimum amount of reduced liquid (olive oil and butter) at just below simmering prior to firing the beef on a custom-made grill.
Wilmer Valderama
SPEAKING OF my favorite food, Nick Lachey (actor, singer), Nicky Hilton (model, designer, hotelier, heiress) and actor Wilmer Valderama (the tight pants guy on That ‘70s Show and the MTV Yo Momma guy) are opening 720 Aspen, a high-end steak joint now under construction at the Luxor.
THERE’S A video on YouTube posted by Nicky Hilton (where does she find the time?) of her and Paris partying in Vegas. Get the link at www.KimosVegas.com.
THE LAS VEGAS Convention and Visitors Authority has started a new service to check in luggage and issue boarding passes to conventioneers at the Convention Centre (Yeah! More time in the casino).
THE GREAT Art & Craft Festival is happening at Cashman Center Exhibit Hall Nov. 3-5. It’s a Unique Shopping Experience where you’ll find the best original handmade crafts, clothing and jewelry.
GET MORE Kimo’s Vegas at www.KimosVegas.com, in both issues of “MidWeek,” in Oceanic Time Warner’s “Around Hawaii,” on OC16 Monday at 9 p.m., on The New ESPN 1420 Thursday night at 7 and with Billy V. Friday morning at 7:20 on Hawaiian105 KINE.
