To Vaccinate Or Not To Vaccinate?

I get a lot of reader e-mails. Most are thoughtful, and I try to answer them unless they are redundant harangues on rail and taxes.
Some are totally off-the-wall. A prime example is a recent one titled “Inoculations: The True Weapons of Mass Destruction.”
It’s a plea from a local woman not to vaccinate ourselves or our children. Why? Because, the e-mailer claims, it kills our immune system and the vaccine companies are trying to “bleed us dry financially, but even more important is their collusion with the goals of the New World Order.”
If advice that goes against all our state health experts and those in the Centers for Disease Control and World Health Organization were not suspect enough, that term New World Order should tip you off. NWO is a nutty conspiracy theory that some elites are plotting a global government and that “unproductive segments of society” have to be done away with.
And what better way than to slip some DNA vaccine into our inoculations for flu, etc. DNA vaccination is a technique for protecting an organism against disease by injecting it with genetically engineered DNA to produce an immunological response.
But as my local e-mailer claims:
These vaccines contain plasmids, which are closed rings of recombinant DNA that make their way into the nucleus of a cell and instruct the cell to synthesize encoded antigenic proteins. Thus, the very genetic makeup of the individual, plant or animal will be altered to produce a never-ending supply of antigens to distract the immune system. These genetic changes will remain as cell division occurs, and will be transmissible to offspring. This is the TRUE mark of the beast, and could lead to extinction and/or modification, including behavioral, of any group inoculated. (Source: Dr. Rebecca Carley, M.D.)
Carley also claims the great flu epidemic of 1918 which killed millions was caused by us inoculating our World War I soldiers with the flu vaccine. Sheesh!
This is the same gang clinging to the belief that autism is caused by the ethyl-mercury in childhood vaccinations. That’s been scientifically outed for years, but the true believers cling on.
Some parents are refusing to have their kids inoculated against swine flu because of these fear mongers.
The New York Times interviewed Dr. Paul Offit, chief of infectious diseases at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and who has written extensively about the anti-inoculation movement. He says the H1N1 vaccine has 60 years of experience and technology behind it: It’s safe, it’s clearly effective - and yet many people still have difficulty “figuring out where the real risks lie.”
Offit wonders if people are more comfortable with sins of omission than of commission. Rather than inject a foreign substance into your body, he said, “you’ll take your chances with a natural virus infection, which may or may not kill you.”
