Honolulu City Lights Ornament
Wednesday - December 08, 2010
For the 11th straight year, the Friends of Honolulu City Lights have designed a collectible ornament to raise funds for the monthlong holiday program, which opened Dec. 4 at Honolulu Hale and closes Jan. 2.
This year’s ornament takes off in a new direction. After designing all-brass and enamel ornaments for the past decade, the Friends decided to offer a photo and brass ornament.
They created a maile leaf frame in brass to surround a tinted photo of the iconic Shaka Santa sitting on the Honolulu Hale fountain. The frame was designed by Owen Ho, longtime designer for Honolulu City Lights. The ornament’s artwork is by Ron Slauson.
The 2010 photo/brass ornament is $18 and can be purchased at any Macy’s store on Oahu, all Oahu branches of First Hawaiian Bank, the Borders Book store at Ward Centers and the Waikiki Trolley Stop at Duty Free Shoppers. A small stand for the ornament comes in each decorative box.
The Friends of Honolulu City Lights is a non-profit organization dedicated to raising funds to support the holiday celebration, which includes the Public Workers Electric Light Parade, a holiday concert and the tree-lighting event.
By purchasing one of these ornaments, you are helping to keep these events free to the public. There also is a T-shirt ($10-$14 depending on the size) available for sale and holiday notecards ($10). This year’s T-shirt was designed by Owen Ho and Leio Li, and celebrates the 20th year for the Electric Light Parade. The T-shirts are available for sale on most nights in front of City Hall through Dec. 23.
You also can purchase the 2010 ornament and all past year ornaments (2000-2009), as well as the T-shirts and notecards through the Friends’ website at honolulucitylights.org.
