Partners Rick Oliveira, Renee Jensen-Oliveira
and Cheryl De Presbiteres created their own
makeup line, Fixx Cosmetics
The power of three makes dreams come true for makeup artists husband-and-wife team Rick Oliveira and Renee Jensen-Oliveira, and Cheryl De Presbiteres, as they’ve created a makeup line of their own, Fixx Cosmetics.
“When I lived in Las Vegas I wanted to do my own makeup line,” says Cheryl, a Pearl City grad about her dreams six years ago.
In Honolulu, after Rick, Renee and Cheryl decided to launch their makeup line about two years ago, Renee, who is entertainer Dick Jensen’s daughter, had a dream about the name of the beauty products, Fixx Cosmetics. When Renee told Cheryl about it, Cheryl remembered that Fixx was the name she was going to use back then.
For makeup artists, the goal was simple. “Let’s create a makeup line that would have everything from start to finish that we’d want in our makeup box,” explains Renee.
They have two years of research and development under their belt, with clients of the married couple’s seven-year-old 1,000 square-foot Sanctuary Salon on Kapahulu having served as their “No. 1 critics and our crash test intelligence.” (As opposed to crash test dummies.)
“By the time you leave here, everyone knows each other,” says Rick of their staff of about 10 people.
With foundation, face powder, concealer, brushes, pencils, blush, lip glosses, lip liner, lipstick, eye shadow, mascara in the inventory, Fixx Cosmetics will be sold at their salon as well as at many locations, including other salons and boutiques. One of their products, I Line, can turn any color eyeshadow or blush into a liquid eyeliner.
Since the November launch of their line, Fixx Cosmetics has graced trade shows, bridal parties, makeup parties and charity functions to help spread the word.
The company is also looking for a face to represent the line, and its website, www.fixxcosmetics.com, will be online in the future.
The threesome also credits the success of the line to Kyle B., the styling director for Sanctuary Salon, as well as their publicist Philana Bouvier of Bouvier Productions.
One of the biggest challenges for the creators, who are also hairstylists, was to come up with the right mix for the foundation.
“The spectrum of color reflects all the people in Hawaii,” Renee notes. “There’s a lot of colors. We wanted to get it just right so we went back to the drawing board until we got it.”
Besides selling the makeup, they can also teach people how to use it. Renee used to do makeup at Universal Studios, and she also teaches others about the beauty industry at Kapiolani Community College among other venues. Rick, a St. Louis grad, was a singer and musician for nine years with Calamity Jayne, and he got introduced to the world of beauty through his wife. Cheryl, who has a computer science degree and a Realtor license, has been a makeup artist for 13 years. Her high-profile client list includes Vince Neil from Motley Crue and designers Christian Dior and Chanel.
“It’s a fun line,” chimes the threesome.
