Warriors are staying alive in the BCS race

Del.icio.usAnd then there were three. Only Hawaii, Kansas and Ohio State remain unbeaten. So where are they ranked by the Bowl Championship Series (BCS)? Well, the Buckeyes are No. 1, the Jayhawks No. 4, and the Warriors are No. 16. Before you get too disturbed, consider that even the Warriors’ biggest naysayer, Jerry Palm of CollegeBCS.com, has come around.
“I’d say Hawaii is 90 percent, at least, if they win out,“says Palm of the Warriors’ chances of getting to a BCS game. “The only thing that could hurt them is if they have another narrow win against someone other than Boise State. That could hurt them in the human polls.”
Hard to believe we’re down to discussing human polls vs. computer polls.You might think the computer polls would be quite consistent, but they are all over the place regarding UH. They have the Warriors at 23 in one poll, 56 in another.It all depends on the weight given to various factors; the only factor disallowed is margin of victory.
* It will be a shame if Saturday’s game at Aloha Stadium isn’t a sellout. Pat Hill’s Fresno State team has turned it around with a 6-3 record and will have a chip on its shoulder after being beaten like a tied-up goat by Hawaii in Fresno last year. It’d be nice to treat the Fresno team to a reception like Bulldog fans give to visiting opponents.The fact that Fresno State tries to physically smash opponents is enough to guarantee the Warriors will be jacked for the challenge.
Fans holding a valid military I.D. will be able to buy tickets on a twofor-one basis for the football and volleyball games this weekend at the Stan Sheriff box office.
* The Rainbow Warrior basketball team opens its season against San Diego Friday night. Don’t be surprised if Bob Nash starts five returning seniors. UH has been improving during fall practice, but still needs to integrate seven new faces to the up-tempo style that Nash desires to play. Imagine UH applying a press in the first half of a game. That’s something Hawaii fans haven’t seen in the last 20 years.
* Kudos to the Rainbow Wahine soccer team, which clinched the WAC title with a 7-O whitewash of Idaho last weekend. Head coach Pinsoom Tenzing notched his third regular season championship.
* Who says there are no upsets in local high school football? After knocking off Kahuku in the OIA quarterfinals, Kapolei came within two points of dispatching Waianae in the semis before losing 14-13.
* And speaking of Kapolei, former Hurricane and current Navy QB Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku Enhada became a part of academy lore by guiding the Midshipmen to their first win over Notre Dame since Roger Staubach. Kakeaku-Enhada was brilliant in the overtime periods with a couple of terrific passes for scores. Navy head coach Paul Johnson says Kaipo-Noa can become one of the elites in running his offense right up there with Tracy Ham of Georgia Southern and former Warrior Michael Carter.
