The UH Hiring Process Worked

Del.icio.usThe recent hiring of Norm Chow as the next UH head football coach gives the Warrior program a leader with vast experience and impeccable football credentials. He also has Hawaii roots and great Mainland connections in both the collegiate and NFL ranks.
When you consider the hiring process, it seems almost a miracle that it works so well. First a search committee is formed, which then winnows the list of candidates by examining resumes. Next, a handful of candidates are interviewed (in this instance, there were five) for 90 minutes each. Then the names of three candidates are forwarded to select the new coach.
One 90-minute interview! When I first moved to Hawaii, I applied to some 30-odd restaurants looking for work as a waiter or bartender. I finally got a call back from a Waikiki restaurant that had only a busboy position. I was interviewed three times. My wife had three interviews before being hired for her present job.
Here we hire arguably the most important and certainly highest-paid position in the state on the basis of one interview, and yet far more often than not, the person hired becomes extremely successful. I expect that will be true for Norm Chow. And for Hawaii fans, this is the time to get behind the new coach and show support. It will take the whole sports community to build the program and get it back to where we all want it to be. This looks like it could be the start of a tremendously exciting era for UH, and we all have a stake in the program’s success.
It’s time to weigh in on some of the high-profile bowl games, and three of the five BCS game should be exciting.
The Fiesta bowl pairs Oklahoma State and Stanford, and two of the best quarterbacks in the college game. OSU’s Brandon Weeden and Stanford’s Andrew Luck are talented field generals and excellent passers. Weeden, though, has more weapons at his disposal, highlighted by AllAmerican WR Justin Blackmon. The Cowboys have a little more speed on defense. Oklahoma State 38, Stanford 24.
The Rose Bowl should be exciting with Oregon and its high-octane offense and Wisconsin with excellent balance. While Russell Wilson gives the Badgers an extra dimension, the Ducks have unreal speed. I expect a lot of points to be scored but in the end, speed kills. Oregon 45, Wisconsin 28.
The national championship is a rematch, but that is not a problem for me. These are the best two teams in the country. Both Alabama and LSU are terrific defensively, and LSU will have an edge of special teams, but the Tide has Trent Richardson. I thought Alabama was the better team in the first game, and now they’ll have the focus that a close loss brings. And there will be a TD in this one! Alabama 23, LSU 17!
