TCU Deserves A Title Game

If I were TCU head football coach Gary Patterson, I would be ordering my team their rings right now. It wouldn’t say MWC champions or Rose Bowl champions. It would say National Champions 2010.
While the BCS will crown Auburn in the wake of its win over Oregon, TCU can make a valid argument that its Horned Frogs were victorious in every game they played. Only a convoluted system prevented them from the opportunity to demonstrate that they were the best team in the land. From Pop Warner to the NFL, including every level of college football except for the FBS (formerly known as Div. I-A) championships are won on the field through a playoff format.
If you want to become really irritated, read Death to the BCS to discover how the interests of a few have cost the schools more than $400 million every year. We’ll get a playoff and a true champion eventually. But for now, if I were a TCU player, I’d happily wear that championship ring because in 2010 nobody beat my team on the field of play.
* It was interesting that LSU head coach Les Miles met with Michigan officials to discuss the coaching vacancy at his alma mater, only to announce shortly thereafter that he was remaining at LSU.
It makes you wonder if Michigan was a little tight with the purse strings, or if maybe Miles felt the need to remind the folks on the bayou that he’s a pretty good coach and in demand.
Most football fans would consider a move to Ann Arbor to be a step down at this point.
You wonder what it will take for someone to lure Chris Peterson away from Boise State. Stanford reportedly had serious interest, but Peterson has a strong comfort level with the Broncos despite losing offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin to the same position at Texas.
And while Jim Harbaugh left the Cardinal to move to the NFL with the Niners, a couple of coaches are going back to college. Charlie Weis gave up the offensive co coordinator job with the Chiefs to take that same job with the Florida Gators. Also the Dolphins QB coach David Lee is taking the offensive coordinator post at Ole Miss. We are now seeing frequent movement between college and NFL by coaches in both directions.
* There isn’t much doubt about which conference gets the alpha designation in college basketball. The Big East has five teams in the top 10; no other conference comes close. Syracuse, Pitt,Villanova, Notre Dame and UConn had a combined record of 71-6 as we go to press, and any one of them - or more than one - could make it to the Final Four.
Some UH Rainbow Warrior basketball fans are disappointed about the tough start in conference. Keep the faith. This team still needs a couple of pieces to compete at the top of the conference.
This year will have its share of struggles, particularly with the more athletic teams in the league.
And many of the players are having to adjust to the intense ball pressure in league play. No surprise for players who are in their first year of Division 1. But these growing pains will pay dividends down the road.
