Del.icio.usFinally, it’s football! For those about to pack the tailgate party, be reminded that the lower Halawa gate will open at 1.30 p.m., an hour earlier than last year. Other gates will open at 2:30.Additional parking can be found at Leeward Community College, Kam Drive-In and Radford High School.All but Radford will have shuttle service available.
Anyone using alternative parking gets free admission to a new tail-gate option that features air-conditioning, TV monitors showing college football games from around the country and food sold by Centerplate at prices discounted from those inside the stadium. Those who want to join this tail-gate but did not use a alternative parking will be admitted for a $5 charge.
Colt Brennan is the subject of a national media frenzy,with full-page stories in the New York Times and Sports Illustrated.No other UH player has ever been paid this much attention.And judging from practice, Brennan and the offense seem poised to pick up where they left off last year. I suspect that opposing defensive coordinators will not sleep well the week they play the Warriors.
Davone Bess is slated to rerun punts in this weekend’s opener. He might also be the team’s best punter,though he wouldn’t be called on unless there is an emergency. I can’t recall a player at this level performing both jobs.
The Rainbow Wahine Volleyballers had a rough opening tournament - finishing 1-2, including a sweep at the hands of Oregon State, a team that was winless in the PAC-10 last year. There’s no Kanoe Kamanao,but still it’s disappointing. Dave Shoji may have to decide on a set lineup because last week’s constant shuffling led to a lack of rhythm and consistency. And it’s not going to get any easier this week with Louisville, Kansas State and UCLA on tap.
It’s easy to see why USC is college football’s No. 1. Until Emmanuel Moody decided to transfer earlier this week, the Trojans had 10 running backs who had been Super Prep All-Americans, nine were Prep Star All-Americans and seven were Parade All-Americans. How’s that for depth?
Michael Vick held a press conference after his plea in federal court and managed about as well as possible.He spoke rather than read,and seemed contrite. Cynics will no doubt wonder at the timing,but this is the first step toward redemption. Vick will be sentenced on Dec. 10, and faces up to 18 months in prison.
I agonized on Sunday with Parker McLachlin. The PGA Tour rookie had a seven-stroke lead after the first three rounds, but could-n’t find his game in the final round. He lost his lead by the eighth hole and ended up fourth in the Pete Dye Classic on the Nationwide Tour. McLachlin did not qualify for the FedEx playoffs, but has seven PGA events remaining to try to make the top 125, which would secure his PGA card for next year.
