Out Of The Ballpark Ticket Prices

Del.icio.usI’m still not used to current ticket prices for professional sports. After hearing that the average price for a Mavs-Heat ticket in Dallas was $1,172, I knew I was a little out of touch. But when my brother-in-law Todd told me he had acquired four field-level tickets for a Yankee game this summer as a gift to our vacationing family, I looked at the Yankees website for a map so my boys could see where we’d be sitting. On the site next to the map was a list of prices. I nearly fell off my chair to see that field-level seats are $325 each.
That’s a long way from having paid $5 as a teenager for seats in the bleachers. Now a game for a family of four involves a savings plan.
* A number of Hawaii football fans got very excited when it was revealed that former Michigan quarterback Tate Forcier contacted UH about a possible transfer. Before anyone gets too hopped up, note that Forcier has contacted other schools as well. Also, his Michigan transcript is reportedly an absolute disaster. And that’s before UH offensive co-coordinator Nick Rolovich even has time to evaluate what kind of a fit Forcier might be in a run and shoot offense.
* The legendary talent agency IMG decided to allow Tiger Woods to go his own way, but it appears the real rift was not with Woods but with his longtime IMG agent Mark Steinberg. It’s not like the Tiger Woods franchise had fallen off the cliff. After bringing in $90.5 million in pre-scandal 2009, Woods still managed $62.3 million in 2010. But Steinberg’s contract was up, and he wanted far more than IMG was willing to pony up. As expected, Woods stayed with Steinberg. No telling whether the injured Woods will get his game and mojo back, but he is still very popular in Europe and Asia, where his personal peccadilloes tend to be overlooked. Oh, well, IMG still has Arnold Palmer.
* The upcoming NBA draft is thought to be one of the weakest in decades; there is not a single franchise player in the bunch and possibly only two players considered to be first-year starters.
And maybe it’s just as well with a lockout on the horizon. A large number of teams are bleeding red ink, and the two sides are so far apart that many feel that it will be quite some time before play resumes.
TNT analyst Charles Barkley goes even further, believing the entire season will be lost in 2011-12. A shame, because the recent playoffs were terrific, and ratings were through the roof.
Whenever play does resume, figure that the now highly disparaged Miami Heat will be in the mix for future titles. It might be tough under a new labor contract to assemble several stars, and Miami already has three with four or five prime years left.
