Hooray, it’s football season again — finally!

Del.icio.usThe scene in my house last Sunday:
“Why are you sitting by the radio?” asks my long-suffering wife.
“Saints-Steelers,” I reply through a mouthful of chips.
“A football game?” she looks at me, incredulous.
“Yep, first pre-season game,” I say, trying to hear two voices at once.
“So does this game mean anything?”
Now she’s fully cognizant that I am of some different and strange species.
“Well, uh, no, not exactly,” I offer, wondering how to explain that it’s football and I’m jonesing big time.
“Why would you listen to that?” she asks.
I want to come up with something clever, like when they asked Willie Sutton why he robbed banks and he said “because that’s where the money is,” or even something vaguely profound, like when George Mallory was queried as to why he climbed Mt. Everest and he responded “Because it’s there.” But nothing pithy jumps into mind.
I go to my usual fallback. “It’s work, honey. I have to know what’s happening.”
I’m only a little defensive now.
“How come you’re not watching it on TV?” she asks.
Finally, a question I can answer. “Well, you know that NFL Network? They’re in a major battle with the big cable operators, and ... hey, where are you going? This is good stuff.”
Oh well, she knew it was coming; she just didn’t know it was coming so soon.
* There’ve been some good turnouts at University of Hawaii football practices by fans anxious to see if the Warriors can live up to the hype.
Fans and media alike were awaiting their first glimpse of Leon Wright-Jackson, the transfer running back from Nebraska. One thing was obvious after two days - the man has another gear.
Kealoha Pilares also looks good. He’s an exceptionally graceful runner.
But if the Warriors absolutely need to protect Colt Brennan on a particular play, don’t be surprised if they call on David Farmer. He’s still the best blocker they have.
* It’s amazing what Mainland sports guys latch onto when they ask about UH football.
I did a radio interview with an ESPN affiliate in Columbus, Ohio. The host wanted to know if it was true that the players were housed in a dance studio during training camp. When I told him it was, he said to tell the players that the Buckeyes are in a new $21 million facility complete with a juice bar.
I think I’ll wait till the Buckeyes are on the UH schedule, and then I’ll tell them.
* Fans of Tadd Fujikawa were disappointed that he failed to make the cut in his pro debut at the Reno-Tahoe Open after ballooning to a first round 78.
But the irrepressible 16-year-old lit it up on the back nine on Friday with four birdies down the stretch to card a 71. That’s the kind of resiliency he’ll need to make a success of his professional golf career.
You can’t help but root for him.
