Can UH Beat Boise? You Bet

Could Hawaii knock off Boise State this Saturday on the blue field? It’s a question that is being asked repeatedly in the wake of the Warriors’ recent success. The answer: It’s not impossible.
And if that sounds short of a ringing endorsement, think what the answer would have been just a month ago. The truth is that Hawaii has improved rapidly on both sides of the ball, can score in bunches and is capable of big plays on defense.
But Boise State is really good. Their QB is becoming one of the finest in college football, and they can run and throw with tremendous efficiency. Defensively, Boise State is more physical up front than they are given credit for, and they have both instinct and speed in the back end.
UH will have to be on its absolute A-game, and cannot afford the three or four mistakes that they’ve been able to overcome against lesser opponents.
But I’m appalled at the people that call my radio show and swear that they are Hawaii fans, but want Boise State to win because “we need the money.” No true fan could say that. You have to want the Warriors to beat Boise State badly. The way the BCS is set up, it doesn’t mean that much to UH’s bottom line, but that’s no matter. Root for your team heart and soul, and let the powers that be worry about the dough.
* The NBA opened its season last week and all eyes turned to Boston, where the Celtics hosted the Miami Heat. I couldn’t say I was surprised that the Celtics won. LeBron, D-Wade and Bosh will win a lot of games, but it will be a while until they are cohesive. While Miami bounced back to defeat the 76ers the next night, the team will be a work in progress.
If they even make the NBAfinals this year, I’ll still go with the Lakers, who understand their roles completely. And look out for Oklahoma City, where the young talent might not be a year away after all. If you haven’t seen Kevin Durant
lately, you have to check him out.
* Seems a lot of people were missing the point as the WAC was negotiating with soon-to-be departed Fresno State and Nevada. It was never really about the money; it’s all about the football schedules for 2011. If the Bulldogs and Wolfpack left early all the remaining WAC teams would have been in a schedule bind for next year, and might not have been able to fill the pukas, potentially costing the schools a ton of money. And you knew the renegades never intended to cough up the full $5 million.
* One week into the new NFL rules on flagrant hits on defenseless players, it appears to be much ado about nothing. Certainly there is no evidence that it will change the game or its popularity. The hard hits will still be around, and so will the fans.
If two strike-shortened seasons didn’t drive them away, it seems like nothing will. And who knows, we may be in for another work stoppage in 2011.
