Abused Again, Wahine Need To Win

Del.icio.usAre we all over the irritation that the No. 3-ranked Rainbow Wahine volleyball team got the No. 12 seed?
You can be disappointed, but you should hardly be surprised. Dave Shoji’s team gets abused by the selection committee on a nearly annual basis. Not only do they get passed over as a host despite leading the country in attendance and profit every single year, but they get put in brutal regionals. While Shoji knows it is ludicrous, he manages to get on with his business pretty quickly.
The best revenge for the Rainbow Wahine would be a trip to the Final Four.
Tiger Woods seems somewhat dismayed about the media crush surrounding his one-car accident. But it’s the same media that has made him the most recognizable athlete in the world, as well as the richest.
The incredible success breeds interest, which in turn breeds a level of scrutiny that would make most people uncomfortable.
Add to that a story that just does-n’t hang together, toss in rumors that Tiger has been seen with a New York nightclub hostess and you have a tidbit too juicy to ignore. Nobody believes that Tiger’s facial lacerations were caused by backing into a fire hydrant at a speed that didn’t set off his airbag.
And some are snickering over his wife’s swinging a golf club to smash out the rear window of his SUV. That’s what I call a rescue club! There is some thought that she might have tried to use Tiger’s cranium like a hacker at a driving range.
But that’s all speculation, and Tiger will try to get away with his Web site statement. After all, if it were you or me, and we had a fender bender with no booze involved, the police would file a report and that would be the end of it. Tiger doesn’t have to tell anybody where he was going at 2:30 in the morning, no matter how much the public wants to know.
This is one case where Tiger’s interests will be best served saying nothing, and apparently that’s what he is going to do. Sure, they’ll miss him at his charity event, but maybe he should spend some quality time with the family out on the yacht, which ironically is named Privacy.
The best feel-good story in the NFL this year is the comeback by Tennessee QB Vince Young. After watching his career derailed by poor play and emotional instability, he has come back with a push from team owner Bud Adams, and played the Titans back into the play off picture with solid decision-making and some late-game heroics. Instead of carping about his situation, Young readied himself for his eventual opportunity and is making the most of it.
With all of the changes in the college coaching ranks, you’ve got to wonder how long Boise State will be able to hold onto Chris Peterson. He is the complete package for someone looking for a head coach.
He is young, innovative, a terrific talent evaluator, an excellent recruiter and a proven winner.
The only thing he lacks seems to be a gift for self-promotion, which explains why he’s still in his own private Idaho.
