A Warriors ‘home’ game in Las Vegas

Del.icio.usThe University of Hawaii football team squeaked one out against Louisiana Tech, and it won’t be any easier this Saturday in Las Vegas. The Rebels came within two minutes of upsetting No. 5 Wisconsin.
One big area of concern is the offensive line - Colt Brennan was sacked four times against the Bulldogs. The UH defense gave up 175 yards to La. Tech in the first quarter before an adjustment was made by defensive coordinator Greg McMackin. Also, the performance of the haka led to a 15-yard penalty enforced on the opening kickoff, leading to great field position for La. Tech.
On the plus side, Jason Rivers was phenomenal, making 14 catches for 178 yards and a touch-down. Colt Brennan threw for 543 yards and four TDs despite the pressure. Dan Kelly made a 49-yard field goal to force overtime. And cornerback Gerard Lewis made a huge play to win the game on a pass deflection. Tough to win on the road when you lose the turnover battle 3-zip.
The UNLV game may be the closest to a home game on the road that Hawaii will ever play. Estimates are that 15,000 could be wearing green at Boyd Stadium.
On the national front:
* Have you ever seen such a precipitous drop in two games like what’s happened to the Michigan Wolverines? Not only the loss to Appalachian State, but being blown out by Oregon in the Big House. Lloyd Carr is on borrowed time. This will be his final year in Ann Arbor barring an absolute miracle the rest of the way.
* No man is less popular in the state of Georgia than South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier. After dominating the Dawgs while he was head coach at Florida, the ol’ ball coach took his Gamecocks to Athens and upset Georgia 16-12, not allowing the home team a touchdown.
* LSU served notice that it has a claim on being the nation’s best team with a 48-9 shellacking of Virginia Tech. It’s been a while since I’ve seen a more dominant college defense. The Hokies were never in the game.
* The New England Patriots look new and improved on offense with the addition of wide receiver Randy Moss. Much was made of Moss missing pre-season games and practices, but he looked terrific as the Pats buried the Jets last Sunday. New England looks like the best in the AFC East.
* How bad is the Chicago Bears offense? Just three points in the opener against San Diego. The Rex Hex is back. It won’t matter how good Brian Urlacher and the D play if they can’t get something going on the other side of the ball.
Ah, football season. Isn’t life grand?
