Where were you born and raised? Born in Kalihi, raised in Pearl City and graduated from Pearl City High School.
What started your interest in the hospitality area?
I had lots of family and friends visit the Islands.
How would you describe Kani Ka Pila to someone who’s not been? For our malihinis, I would say, “Enjoy the wonderful flavors and music of Hawaii.” It’s a kanikapila setting. Come, relax, eat, drink and just sit back and listen to the best Hawaiian music in town.
It’s only been open for a couple of weeks, but the place is busy! What’s the reception been like so far? For guests at the hotel, it’s a great place to kick back and enjoy the rest of the day. Some don’t even make it back to their room after a day out sightseeing or at the beach. They come to eat, have a cocktail or two and then the music starts. And the locals are coming right at pau hana time. They basically have the same idea as our guests; however, family or friends will meet them here as well. A table for two can easily turn into a party of 12.
Where do you like to go to relax for dinner? My mother’s or brother’s house in Waimanalo. Kawika Kahiapo lives right next door to my brother - very kanikapila there.
What’s always in your fridge at home? Poi. My husband and son are fishermen. They make sure I have fish to go with the poi.
Who would you most like to see come to Kani Ka Pila for the evening? If my grandparents were still alive, I would have them here with me every night. My grandpa spent many weekends in Waimanalo with Gabby Pahinui. You know, especially on Wednesday, when Cyril Pahinui is performing, I feel them with me. That’s what makes my job a Kani Ka Pila so enjoyable.
