Why Bush Needs A Good Snow Job

President Bush selected Tony Snow of Fox News to replace Scott McClellan as White House press secretary. Maybe now we will be able to learn exactly what the heck the president is thinking.
I really enjoy Snow’s work. He is a syndicated columnist, a radio talk show host and TV host of Fox News Sunday. He is not a sycophant. He is a thoughtful, articulate and honest man. I have had the pleasure of interviewing Tony on my radio program numerous times and his forthrightness and professionalism is something I have always admired.
Regardless, he has one helluva job ahead of him.
I am a supporter of President Bush and his administration. I believe some of the most talented people in this nation are among his closest advisers and staff. His cabinet is filled with bright, articulate and effective individuals. I do not subscribe to the opinion that President Bush is an incompetent boob who was carried into office on the robed shoulders of a partisan Supreme Court. I do not believe the president lied about Iraq. I do not believe the mainstream press offers a comparable number of uplifting stories of accomplishment in Iraq vis a vis the steady diet of death, mayhem and terror.
I submit President Bush and his team were the best ones to deal with post-9/11, and shudder to think where this nation would be if Al Gore were calling the shots. Thankfully, the nation has not suffered another devastating attack.
Our economy is functioning its best in years. Since 2003 we have more than 5 million new jobs, the unemployment rate is at 4.7 percent (the best over a period of decades), consumer confidence is high, 30-year mortgage rates are at 6.5 percent and the Dow is over 11,000.
Despite the positive news, President Bush’s approval numbers are at a all-time low. Enter Tony Snow.
Yes, there are challenges with this White House. But this administration has done an effective job at shepherding an expanding economy and providing a safe, well-defended living environment. These, and other uplifting messages must be effectively articulated by Snow. If not, the mainstream press will continue its focus on the negative and the people of this country will be ill-served in developing a well-informed opinion.
I’m also encouraged by Tony’s appointment because I am not satisfied with the president’s position regarding rising fuel prices and illegal immigration. I think President Bush is dead wrong in calling for investigations of oil companies, and I believe a pseudo-amnesty for illegal immigrants is misguided.
As much as Tony Snow must advance the positive accomplishments of this administration, he must also allow access into the reasoning of his boss on controversial issues, too.
