Colt Mania, War On Weed Whackers

If you just landed in Hawaii from another planet and read or watched local news, you would have to come to the conclusion that Colt Brennan is the most important human being alive. I couldn’t believe our local news coverage on the “Hit Heard Around Halawa” was the lead story on at least one TV newscast and was front page fodder for our dailies. Is the story of a football quarterback getting a concussion that dramatic of an event? Judging from the media response, I guess so.

I am not here to be a downer for the UH football season. I am delighted that Coach June Jones and his staff are enjoying a successful season. I applaud the UH team for accomplishing so much, too. But with all the things happening in our world, the coverage of Brennan getting slammed was over the top. My eyes really were rolling at the news reports that the WAC (Western Athletic Association) was investigating whether the hit Colt took was legal or not.

What? Gimme a break. Colt Brennan is a big boy and football is - now brace yourself - a violent game. When the quarterback leaves the pocket and starts heading downfield, he is fair game.

The question should be, “Where were the other UH jerseys protecting their star player?” It was a good, solid hit and Colt did well by bouncing back as soon as he did.

I did receive an e-mail alerting me to a Fresno State blog expressing angst over the author’s attendance of the recent UH/FSU home game at Aloha Stadium. According to this report, and confirmed by another who witnessed most of the events, the Fresno State fans seated in the visitors’ section were spat upon, sworn at, struck by filled water bottles, challenged to confrontations and fights and removed by authorities. The conduct by some local fans is abysmal at best and criminal at worst. The offensive language and the aggression is an indictment on the cretins who acted this way and should not be a reflection on the rest of the fans or our community.

But, if you are related to or are friends with someone who acts like this, it’s your responsibility to stop them. I know they are the ones being jerks, but if you’re hanging with jerks and do nothing to stop it, then you’re a jerk too. On top of that, the Stadium Authority must step up security at these games. Safety should be paramount and this situation is a lawsuit waiting to happen.

I have to admit my patience has ended. I don’t like to pick a fight, but the time has come. I am formally announcing my personal war against weed whack-ers and air blowers.

I hate them with all my heart. The idyllic serenity of morning is regularly violated by the loud screeching of these weapons of mass irritation.

Our neighborhood is assaulted every weekend beginning before 8 a.m. and ending when everything in its path is dead. I am calling for an outright ban of the excruciatingly loud electric models and the mandatory use of the quieter electric models. I am not against well-manicured lawns, but if you’re not hiring Edward Scissorhands, then use the next best thing. My ears thank you.

Is it my imagination or are prices going up on just about everything? I know gas prices are a pain, but they always were. Last week, premium was $3.86 a gallon. Oh, where are the days of $2 gas? The lowest price I remember as a kid was 19 cents a gallon at a Sinclair station in the Midwest. But it’s not just the gas. Milk is the killer. I recently paid more than $8 a gallon and clutched my chest as the palpitations set in. Over the past few months, shipping charges have gone up and last week, another shipper announced a 29 percent fuel surcharge increase. This, of course, will be paid by you. I hope your pay is increasing as fast as goods and services.

If not ...
